White backed vultures are moving very quickly in the wrong direction on the Red List of Threatened Species. Loss of habitat, fires and pollution and a raft of factors related to humans are driving this. More recent studies are showing how poisoned animals, which the vultures feed on are killing off breeding adults, and there are cases of poachers poisoning birds around illegally hunted animals.

They may not be the prettiest of birds but they are an important part of the food chain in Africa. Look after them, protect them.
